Course Description

This course introduces the major theory, safety practices, and techniques required for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in the vertical position. Qualifications tests, vertical position, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include vertical SMAW safety and health practices, selection and applications of electrodes for vertical SMAW, vertical SMAW joints, and vertical SMAW to specification. Students must pay a $20 supply fee when registering for this course.

                           types of electrodes used.
     4                    Discuss items related to personal safety and protective equipment.

Selection and Applications of Electrode

     1                    Identify the aspects of proper equipment care and safety.
     2                    Select the proper electrode compatible with the base metal (low hydrogen and mild steel) used
                           in vertical welding.
     3                    Select the proper storage procedure for low hydrogen, mild steel, and other common electrodes.

Vertical SMAW Joints

    1                     Weld stringer beads on practice plate in the vertical position, using 6010, 6011, 7018, and other
                           common welding rods.
    2                     Weld butt joints in the vertical position using 6010, 6011, 7018, and other common welding rods.

    3                     Weld laps joints in the vertical position using 6010, 6011, 7018, and other common welding rods.
    4                     T-joints in the vertical position using 6010, 6011, 7018, and other common welding rods.
    5                     Weld a single V-butt joint on mild steel plate using 6010, 6011, or 7018 electrodes.
    6                     Describe and explain the purpose of welding specifications.
