Course Description

This course provides knowledge of theory, safety practices, inert gas, equipment, and techniques required for successful advanced gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Qualification tests, all positions, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making advanced level industrial standard welds. Topics include GTAW safety and health practices, shielding gases, metal cleaning procedures, GTAW machines and equipment set up, selection of filler rods, GTAW weld positions, and advanced production of GTAW beads, bead patterns, and joints. Students must pay a $20 supply fee when registering for this course.

Course Outcomes

GTAW Safety and Health Practices
Order         Description

1             Explain welding power, connections, polarities, AC/DC, and all units involved with this power supply.
2             Disconnect the power from machine before performing any maintenance task.
3             Ensure that welding machine is properly grounded and electrode holder is properly placed.
4             Wear shop clothing appropriate to the instructional activity.
5             Wear adequate safety glasses at all times while welding.
6             Properly ventilate the welding area.
    7             Wear appropriate footwear.
8             Use all required protective equipment and clothing.

Shielding Gases
Order         Description

1             Explain function of shielding gases used in gas tungsten arc welding.

Metal Cleaning Procedures
Order         Description

1             Clean ferrous and non-ferrous metals for welding.

GTAW Machines and Equipment Set up
Order         Description

1             Set up a TIG welder.
2             Describe the different types of TIG machine available.
3             Select the proper set up for TIG welding non-ferrous alloys.
4             Select correct torch and hose assembly with devices for holding tungsten electrode, conducting
shielding gas to weld puddle, and providing a coolant for torch head.

Selection of Filler Rods
Order         Description

1             Select a filler rod that is compatible with the base metal.

GTAW Weld Positions
Order         Description

1             Follow AWS requirements for welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals in all positions.

Advanced Production of GTAW Beads, Bead Patterns, and Joints
Order         Description

1             Weld various metals using proper GTAW bead formation and joint construction.
