Course Description
This course provides knowledge of theory, safety practices, equipment, and techniques required for successful gas metal arc welding. Qualification tests, all positions, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include GMAW safety and health practices; GMAW theory, machines, and set up; transfer modes; wire selection; shielded gas selection; and GMAW joints in all positions. Students must pay a $20 supply fee when registering for this course.

GMAW Safety and Health Practices
Order Description
1 List and apply basic safety and health practices, rules for GMAW, Ventilation.
2 Practice safe habits in the shop.

GMAW Theory, Machines, and Set up
Order Description
1 Define GMAW.
2 Apply GMAW theory to welds.
3 Identify and select correct sizes and setting on welding machines.
Transfer Modes
Order Description
1 Explain and apply each transfer process.
Wire Selection
Order Description
1 List and identify ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
2 Select the appropriate wire and size for the materials to be welded.
Shielded Gas Selection
Order Description
1 100 % Argon- Identify and select the correct gas for welding application.
2 75% Argon and 25% Carbon dioxide- Identify and select the correct gas for welding application.
3 100% Carbon dioxide- Identify and select the correct gas for welding application.
4 Helium- Identify and select the correct gas for welding application.
GMAW Joints in All Positions
Order Description
1 Weld tee joints and butt joints in all 4 positions using mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum
correctly.
