Course Description

This course provides knowledge of theory, safety practices, inert gas, equipment, and techniques required for successful gas tungsten arc welding. Qualification tests, all positions, are used in the evaluating of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include GTAW safety and health practices, shielding gases, metal cleaning procedures, GTAW machines and set up, selection of filler rods, GTAW weld positions, and production of GTAW beads, bead patterns, and joints. Students must pay a $20 supply fee when registering for this course.

Course Outcomes

GTAW Safety and Health Practices
O
rder                Description
1                     Explain welding power, connections, polarities, AC/DC- and all the units involved with this power
                          supply.
2                     Disconnect the power from machine before performing any maintenance task.
3                     Have welding machine properly grounded and electrode holder properly placed.
4                     Wear shop clothing appropriate to the instructional activity being performed.
5                     Wear adequate safety glasses at all times while welding.
6                     Properly ventilate the welding area.
   7                     Wear appropriate footwear.
8                     Utilize all required protective equipment and clothing.

Shielding Gases
O
rder                Description
1                     Explain the function of the various shielding gases.
Metal Cleaning Procedures
O
rder                Description
1                     Demonstrate how to clean non-ferrous metals for welding.
2                     Demonstrate how to clean ferrous metals for welding.

G
TAW Machines and Set up
O
rder                Description
1                     Demonstrate the ability to set up a TIG welder.
2                     Describe the different types of TIG machines available.
3                     Select the proper set up for TIG welding of non-ferrous alloys.
4                     Select the right torch and hose assembly with collet devices for holding the tungsten electrode,
conducting shielding gas to the weld puddle, and providing a coolant for the torch head.

Selection of Filler Rod

O
rder                Description
