Course Description

This course introduces the major theory, safety practices, and techniques required for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in the overhead position. Qualification tests, overhead position, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include overhead SMAW safety and health practices, selection and applications of electrodes for overhead SMAW, overhead SMAW joints, and overhead SMAW to specification. Students must pay a $20 supply fee when registering for this course.

Course Outcomes

Overhead SMAW Safety and Health Practices
O
rder               Description
1                    Demonstrate safety and health practices and explain how they apply to overhead welding.

S
election and Applications of Electrodes for Overhead SMAW
Order               Description

1                    Identify the types of electrodes that are qualified for overhead welding.
2                    Identify the operational characteristics of these four electrodes: E6010, E6011, E7013, E7018.

Overhead SMAW Joints
O
rder               Description
1                    Prepare joints according to specification for the overhead position.
2                    Weld stringer or weave beads on the practice plate in the vertical position, using either an E6010
                         or 6011 electrode.
3                    Weld a square groove butt joint in the overhead (position using one root bead, one weave bead,
or stringer beads for the cover pass suing either an E6010, E6011, or E601X electrode.
4                    Weld a lap joint in the overhead position using the E6010, E601X, or 6011 electrodes.
5                    Weld a Tee joint in the overhead position using an E6010 or E601X electrode with three passes
                         each side of joint.
6                    Weld a single V-groove butt joint in the overhead position using the E6010 or E601X electrode in
three passes without a backing bar.
7                    Weld a butt joint in the overhead position, using E7018 electrode using only one pass on each
                         side of joint.
8                    Weld a three-pass Tee joint on both sides in the overhead position using an E7018 electrode.
9                    Weld a single V-groove butt joint with a backing bar in the overhead position using the E7018
                         electrode.

Overhead SMAW to Specification
O
rder               Description
1                    Describe and explain the purpose of welding specifications.
2                    Complete overhead welds to general code specifications.
