Course Description
This course introduces the fundamental theory and practices of the cosmetology profession. Instructors will place emphasis on professional practices and safety and infection control. Topics include state rules and regulations, the state regulatory agency, image, bacteriology, decontamination and infection control, chemistry fundamentals, safety and infection control, Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance, and anatomy and physiology.

members, and how they are appointed.
3 Identify sanitation provisions.

5 Describe Georgia State Board of Cosmetology sanitary regulations for salons and schools.

1 Differentiate between sanitation and disinfection.
2 Identify proper use of disinfectants and safe handling guidelines when using and disposing
of chemicals used in the salon.
Chemistry Fundamentals

1 Differentiate between organic and inorganic chemistry.
2 Define atom and molecules.
3 Describe composition of elements, compounds, and mixtures.
4 Describe solutions, suspensions and emulsions.
5 Explain the pH scale.
6 Differentiate between acidy and alkalinity.
Safety

1 Describe proper maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment.
2 Describe first aid for minor cuts and chemical reactions.
3 Participate in emergency evacuation procedures.
Hazardous Duty Standards Act Compliance

1 Describe regulatory agencies and each agencies purpose; i.e., EPA, OSHA.
2 Define MSDS; explain the importance of this law and the repercussions for not abiding by
these regulations.
