Course Description
This course introduces the theory, procedures, and products used in the care and treatment of the scalp and hair. Topics also include disease disorders and their treatments; the fundamental theory and skills required to shampoo, condition, and recondition the hair and scalp; and safety and infection control.

Diseases and Disorders
Order Description
1 Define the various disorders and diseases of the scalp.
2 Differentiate between diseases and disorders of the scalp which can safely be treated in
the salon from those that require medical attention.
3 Identify the structure of the hair root and hair shaft and explain their functions.
4 Define the various diseases and disorders of the hair.
5 Differentiate between the diseases and disorders of the hair that can be treated in the
salon and those that need to be referred to a physician.
Safety Precautions
Order Description
1 Follow safety precautions for scalp and hair treatments.
2 Maintain work area in a safe and sanitary manner.
3 Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling of electrotherapy devices and equipment.
Hair and Scalp Analysis
Order Description
1 Analyze and make a distinction between normal porosity, texture, and condition from
those which require specific handling.
2 Analyze and evaluate health scalp conditions from those which require specialized scalp
treatments.
Basic Hair and Scalp Treatments
Order Description
1 List products and supplies used for basic and corrective hair and scalp treatments.
2 Describe the benefits of scalp manipulations.
3 Perform a scalp massage.
4 Identify and explain the physical and chemical actions that damage hair.
5 Classify and describe types of reconditioning agents.
6 Provide conditioning treatments.
Shampoo Chemistry
Order Description
1 Understand the chemical and botanical ingredients found in shampoos.
2 Distinguish the appropriate product selection in relation to the condition for the intended
service.
3 Distinguish between emulsions and suspensions.
4 Demonstrate utilization of the pH scale.
5 Describe the uses and benefits of various types of shampoos and conditioners.
Shampoo Procedures
Order Description
1 Identify and select appropriate shampoos.
2 Prepare a client for a shampoo employing all safety measures.
3 Perform proper shampooing and rinsing techniques.
