Course Description
This course introduces the fundamental theory and skills required to create shapings, pin curls, fingerwaves, roller placement, blow dry styling, thermal curling, thermal pressing, thermal waving, artificial hair and augmentation, and comb-outs. Students practice styling techniques on manikins during laboratory exercises. Topics include braiding and intertwining hair, styling principles, pin curls, roller placement, fingerwaves, skip waves, ridge curls, blow dry styling, thermal curling, thermal pressing, thermal waving, artificial hair and augmentation, comb-outs, and safety precautions and practices.

Fingerwaves

Ridge Curls

1 Describe ridge curls and ridge curl techniques.

Skip Waves

Blow Dry Styling

1 Identify tools and instruments used in blow drying.

Thermal Pressing
Order Description
1 Describe thermal stoves, stove heated pressing implements and electrical hair
straightening equipment.
2 Use the flat iron to remove curl from over-curly hair.
3 Demonstrate pressing hair with a stove heated pressing implement.
Thermal Curling
Order Description
1 Select and identify the tools used in thermal curling.
2 Develop a style using the figure 6 or figure 8 techniques.
Thermal Waving
Order Description
1 Explain thermal waving techniques.
2 Establish waves by using thermal instruments.
Artificial Hair and Augmentation
Order Description
1 Demonstrate various techniques for using artificial hair and augmentation in styling on a
manikin.
2 Utilize the procedures for fitting, cleaning, shaping and styling all types of human hair
and synthetic wigs and hairpieces.
Comb-Out Techniques

1 Identify implements used in a comb-out.
2 Demonstrate the proper use and handling of instruments used in blow drying.
Safety Precautions

1 Identify unsafe conditions that may exist in shampooing and styling.
